Alone in the universe

Let’s take a break from our regularly scheduled travelogue to address the Daily Post topic–Do you believe in life on other planets?

I answer this question with an enthusiastic–yes! It seems to me the height of conceit to believe that our small star and this insignificant third planet is the only combination among countless stars that managed to produce life. I realize the recipe is complicated and required just the right combination of raw materials and events in order to make life as we understand it. For this reason I also think it is possible Earth is the only planet blessed with life.

Still I hope there are others out there. And I wonder what life is like for them and whether they have evolved intelligent life. I’m enough of a Star Trek geek to hope there are more advanced life forms out there–with a civilization that has figured out complex things like how to live in peace. But I’m enough of a realist to assume other civilizations might be just as screwed up as we are.

It’s interesting to think about it–isn’t it? We may never have contact with life from beyond our solar system–at least not in our lifetime. This gives us plenty of time to imagine other worlds with life similar to ours, but different. Wiser and better or more primitive and warlike.

Great human imaginations from H.G. Wells to Ursula Le Guin, Isaac Asimov to Carl Sagan have painted pictures with a wide range of possibilities.

While we’re thinking about those alien worlds, we may also get a clearer view of our own as seen from space.

Sometimes we get a better perspective when we take a step back. Whether we are alone in the universe or not–it’s a good idea to take some time to think about the possibilities.
