Moving–beyond packing

The past few months I’ve been packing, weeding and more packing. Once the friendly Bekins guys loaded all those boxes on the truck, we breathed a sigh of relief.

Then we arrived in our new home. The vast empty space. Okay, not so vast. In fact it is about one-third the size of our previous home.

At first we were excited, anticipating the arrival of our furniture and boxes. Something to sit on! Yeah.

Then it all arrived. An entire truck full of boxes. I know we’d marked them carefully at the other end so that we’d know where to find things, but somehow when they arrived each box was a mystery. And they’d multiplied.

Our entire home was covered with boxes. All that furniture we’d been wanting to sit on was covered with boxes. Floors covered. Garage cluttered. Walking was a real challenge.

You get the picture.

Suddenly the job seemed overwhelming. Making all that stuff fit. Finding the spatula, scissors or can opener. It took me 3 days to find the telephone!  With diligent effort we’ve cleared paths through the dining room, kitchen and living room. I’ve found and stowed most of my clothes and have sheets to make up the bed. Now the big job–get the office organized.

A place for everything and everything–stuffed in a box with a label that doesn’t match. That’s not how I want to live my life, which means I have a lot of work to do.

  1. Hi Elaine–

Yes–downsizing is a challenge. It’s great to be rid of the stuff, but the process is exhausting.

We downsized in three separate moves. Boxes and more boxes! We empathize, Terry!
