Uplifted by words and music

The recent inauguration and associated events brought Americans together to celebrate in a big way. Huge number in D.C. and many more watching televisions and listening to the radio. It was an amazing collective experience.

Underscoring it all and providing emotional punctuation was some fine music and stirring words. I very much enjoyed the We Are One concert at the Lincoln Memorial on Sunday. At least I enjoyed it vicariously from the comfort of my family room through the HBO broadcast.

On Tuesday there was the brilliant music by John Williams–Aire and Simple Things. And the thoughtful words of poet Elizabeth Alexander in her Praise Song for the Day. It takes a poet to sum up so eloquently in so few words both the history leading to the day and the hope for the future we all felt in that moment.

Words and music.

Expressions of humanity, emotions and dreams.
