The Thump of the Crowd

The sound of clapping in 20 degrees is a sort of dull thumping.

In warmer weather there’s the sharp sound of palm against palm. When it’s freezing outside and everyone is wearing gloves–well, the effect is pretty different.

Still, the spirit was there in Caras Park this evening as Missoulians gathered to honor Martin Luther King, Jr. After twenty minutes or so out in the cold, we walked over to St. Paul Lutheran for a warmer gathering with music, speeches and a spirit of camaraderie.

But then, thinking about MLK’s dream has a tendency to draw people together.
